Road salt is the part people underestimate. It is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air — so a salt film on a surface stays damp long after everything else has dried. That is why steel shelving in a Wisconsin garage rusts from the bottom up.
What fails, and why
Particleboard and MDF at the floor
Slush and salt spray reach the bottom eight inches of anything sitting on a garage floor. Particleboard wicks it, swells, and never recovers. This is the single most common garage cabinet failure in Wisconsin.
Powder-coated and painted steel
Fine until the coating is chipped — and garages chip things. Once bare steel is exposed to salt-laden damp air, corrosion spreads under the coating.
Cheap hardware
Plated hinges and slides corrode and bind. A drawer that will not open in February is the usual first symptom.
Anything sealed and unventilated
A closed cabinet in a freeze-thaw garage condenses moisture inside. Tools stored in it rust despite being dry when they went in.
What holds up
Wall-hung, not floor-standing
This is the most important decision, ahead of material. Getting cabinets six inches or more off the floor removes them from the slush and salt zone entirely, lets you shovel and hose the floor, and keeps meltwater from wicking into anything.
Mount into studs with a continuous hanging rail. A loaded run is heavy and freeze-thaw cycling loosens marginal fasteners.
Plywood boxes with a catalysed finish or high-pressure laminate
Cross-laminated plywood tolerates humidity swings far better than particleboard, and a quality finish on all six faces — including the bottom and the back — is what actually keeps salt-laden damp out.
Marine-grade polymer for the lowest cabinets
If anything must sit at floor level, polymer does not care about water or salt at all. It is expensive, so use it selectively.
Stainless or coated hardware
Stainless slides and hinges, or at minimum a quality zinc-nickel finish. This is a small line item that determines whether the cabinets still work in year eight.

Layout for winter
A Wisconsin garage has a winter mode and a summer mode, and the layout should acknowledge it:
- Near the door: open hooks and a rail for shovels, a broom and an ice scraper. These need to be grabbed with gloves on.
- Tall closed storage at one end for the seasonal swap — patio cushions and garden tools go up in October, snow gear comes down.
- Wall cabinets with doors for anything you want kept off the dust and salt mist.
- A drawer bank for hand tools. Bins on shelves never stay sorted.
Leave the floor genuinely clear. A garage floor that can be shovelled and squeegeed stays drier, and a drier garage is easier on everything in it.
What not to store in an unheated garage
Latex paint freezes and separates permanently. Batteries and anything with a lithium cell lose capacity in the cold and can be damaged by it. Aerosols and pressurised containers are a genuine risk in freeze-thaw. Canned food, paper and fabric all suffer.
A cabinet does not change any of this. Those belong in the basement or inside the house.
If you are insulating or heating the garage
Insulating the door and walls and adding even modest heat changes everything — condensation drops, freeze-thaw ends, and ordinary cabinet materials become viable. If that is on the roadmap, decide before ordering cabinets, because the cheaper spec becomes reasonable.
It also makes the space usable, which is when a workbench and built-in cabinetry start to be worth the investment.

Can I reuse old kitchen cabinets in the garage?
Plywood-box cabinets mounted on the wall, yes. Particleboard boxes set on the floor will be gone in a few winters.
How high should wall cabinets be mounted?
Bottom at about 54 inches if there is a bench below, or 48 inches for a clear wall. Keep at least six inches of clear floor beneath anything.
Do I need doors on garage cabinets?
For tools and anything that can corrode, yes — but leave some ventilation. Fully sealed cabinets in a freeze-thaw garage collect condensation.
What about a slatwall system instead?
Excellent for bulky items and keeps the floor clear. It pairs well with cabinets rather than replacing them.
